You might like to know a bit about me.
First, I use my middle name.
I love the Lord supremely, for starters because he is infinitely superior to me in every imaginable way. More about that in my blog. I cherish and enjoy my family. I am energized by pastoring and preaching God’s Word. I am called to this. I enjoy writing, but in a different way because it’s hard but satisfying work, which also is a calling. I like to think, and writing helps with this. I relax by listening to classical music.
I have published many books and articles and served in editorial roles for Christianity Today’s Leadership Journal and PreachingToday.com for fifteen years. I have a master’s degree in theology from Wheaton Graduate School and a bachelor’s from Illinois State University. I have served as pastor of Lake Shore Church in downtown Chicago since 1995, and previously served three other churches. My wife Nancy and I have four grown sons, four daughters-in-law, and six grandchildren.
My writing has focused on the themes of perseverance, preaching, and sermon illustrations. In my role as editor of Christianity Today’s preaching resources, I read and listened to thousands of sermons by the finest preachers in America from all backgrounds and denominations, including many sermons on subjects related to perseverance and trials, which gives me a rich, balanced perspective.
